Letterpress Road Trip!

I finally found her- a 6 X 10 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop platen letterpress! Molly and John, the wonderful people behind the Living Letter Press sold me my little orange stunner this past weekend. The Living Letter Press is a beautiful print shop offering a full range of letterpress printing services, classes, and workshops in Champaign, IL.

Washington, DC, to Champaign, IL, is an 11 hour drive. Without really wanting to believe the snow and ice in the forecast, we set out for an amazing road trip through Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

We had a lovely evening stopover in Indianapolis. Luckily, we had enough time to drink some local beer and have great sandwiches at the End of the Line.

We awoke to a dusting of snow and after a quick(er) two hour drive, we arrived in Champaign, IL at the Living Letter Press. The Living Letter Press has an exceptional collection of wood type. They print on their awesome collection of Vandercooks. We checked out the Kelsey, John and Molly set me up with a beginner’s collection of furniture, and I saw something many letterpress enthusiasts may have never encountered- unopened boxes of metal type. I can’t decide what made my jaw drop lower, the unopened type or the 4 foot tall wooden type in the collection. I hope you enjoy the photos and look forward to sharing my progress on the Kelsey!

There she is! After over 24 hours on the road in 3 days, the Kelsey is now sitting safely in our little studio apartment on the 10th floor.
